Under Starling / Kings of the Wild – Bank Lane Waterford, 22.11.2024

Under Starling played Waterford’s Bank Lane, a venue that’s undergone a serious glow-up in recent years. What used to feel like a hidden gem is now a space attracting bigger names, but still keeping that intimate charm. The perfect setup for a night that showcased the talent brewing in the Irish music scene.

Kicking things off was Kings of the Wild, a local band quickly cementing themselves as ones to watch. They didn’t hold back (they never do), delivering tracks from their new EP with their usual energy . “Nosering” was the standout moment—a proper anthem that had everyone moving. These guys know how to work a crowd, and their rise feels inevitable at this point.

Then came Under Starling, stepping onto the stage, there was a clear presence switch. There’s something about the way they carry themselves—confident and polished but still approachable and real. From the first note of “Hawthorn Tree,” you could tell they’re operating on a different level. The mix of moody atmospherics and soaring melodies hit hard, setting the tone for a set that showed off just how versatile they are.

Tracks like “The Hunger” brought an emotional weight, blending storytelling with killer instrumentation, while “Rat King” flipped the vibe completely—darker, heavier, and full of bite. They’ve got this knack for shifting gears seamlessly, keeping you hooked the whole way through. For me, “Dreamer” was a stand out moment of the set. It’s one of those songs that hits differently live, with every band member dialed in and the crowd swaying along like they were part of it. I took a moment to stand back during this song and it was very easy to imagine it being sung to thousands of fans.

Under Starling aren’t just playing gigs; they’re building something bigger. The way they handle themselves and the sheer quality of their sound wouldn’t look out of place on a much larger stage. But on this night they kept it local, connecting with their audience, and proving why they’re one of Ireland’s most exciting up-and-coming bands. If you weren’t there, there’s no two ways about it, you missed out. But don’t worry—they’re just getting started.
