Superchunk / Junk Drawer – live gallery and review from Button Factory, Dublin 27.06.26

Three and a half decades into a career built on volume, velocity and an unwavering DIY spirit, Superchunk arrived at Dublin’s Button Factory with nothing to prove. Yet from the opening chords, the North Carolina veterans played as though they still had everything to fight for.

There was no grand entrance or elaborate production. Four musicians walked onstage, exchanged a few smiles and immediately burst into a blistering opening salvo that transformed the intimate Temple Bar venue into something resembling a sweaty American basement show. It was a reminder that while trends maybe come and go, great guitar bands never really lose their edge.

Mac McCaughan remains one of indie rock’s most distinctive frontmen. His unmistakable yelp hasn’t mellowed with age… Whether leading the audience through the band’s earliest material or selections from more recent records, every lyric carried the same restless energy that has defined Superchunk since the late ’80s.

What has always separated the band from many of their peers is their ability to marry aggression with the melody. Songs that begin in a storm of fuzz and feedback somehow reveal enormous pop hooks beneath the noise and live in person, that feels even more pronounced. Jim Wilbur’s razor-sharp rhythm guitar locked effortlessly with McCaughan’s driving leads creates the gloriously ragged wall of sound that has become the band’s signature.

Rather than leaning exclusively on nostalgia, the setlist spanned the band’s expansive catalogue. Newer material slotted naturally alongside classics, a testament to how little Superchunk’s songwriting philosophy has changed. The themes may have matured, but the urgency remains exactly where it always has been.

There was little between-song banter – none was needed. The music spoke loudly enough. Every track seemed to flow seamlessly into the next, creating a relentless ninety-minute sprint that rarely allowed us to catch a breath.

If there was a lesson to take from Superchunk’s Dublin return, it’s that longevity doesn’t have to come at the expense of intensity. Plenty of bands survive for thirty-five years… very few still perform with this level of conviction.

In an era where legacy acts often rely on polished nostalgia, Superchunk remain refreshingly unconcerned with looking backwards. They simply play loud, fast and with absolute belief in every song they have ever written.

Support on the night came from the wonderful Junk Drawer, who are sure to have picked up a chunk of fans of their own.
