“Old Man” is a poignant and reflective new single from Mechanical Wonders, inspired by a fleeting but powerful moment on a Dublin street.
Written by frontman Richie McGrath after encountering an elderly man walking alone in East Wall, the song captures a quiet sense of sadness that quickly turned into a deeper reflection on ageing, isolation, and the often unseen lives of those around us.
“I saw this man struggling along on his own and it just stayed with me. You start wondering about his life—where his people are—and then you turn it on yourself. Will we all end up like that? It made me think about how we move through life and what actually matters.”
Blending warm, melodic indie rock with emotional honesty, “Old Man” carries a subtle protest at its core, not loud or political, but human. It asks listeners to slow down, to notice, and ultimately to give love while they can.
Recorded at Orphan Recording Studios with Gavin Glass, the track marks the first release from the band’s upcoming EP. It showcases a more mature, fully realised version of their sound, one that leans into both their anthemic instincts and their ability to tell real, affecting stories.
Mechanical Wonders is a five-piece indie band from Blanchardstown, Dublin, carving out a sound that blends anthemic guitar-driven energy with grounded, real-life storytelling.
Formed in 2023 from the remnants of their former folk project Good Time Villains, the band which consists of Richie McGrath (vocals/guitar), Keith McLoughlin and Brian Wolohan (guitars), Stephen Caulfield (bass), and Carl O’Connor (drums) has evolved into a tighter, more expansive outfit, trading their acoustic roots for jangling guitars, melodic hooks, and emotionally resonant songwriting.
Having grown up together in the same part of Dublin, their shared background directly feeds into both their chemistry and sound. Their sound is shaped by the guitar bands of the late ’90s and early 2000s while remaining rooted in distinctly Irish storytelling.
Following a strong run of releases and a breakthrough year in 2025—which included a sold-out Dublin show and a headline performance at Whelan’s—Mechanical Wonders has continued to build momentum as a compelling live band with a growing audience.
In 2026, they stepped into Orphan Recording Studios with producer Gavin Glass to record a four-track EP that captures the raw energy and connection of a band that has grown up side by side. The result is a collection of songs that feel both immediate and timeless, marking a confident step forward in their evolution.
With a sound that balances nostalgic indie textures and emotional depth, Mechanical Wonders are quickly establishing themselves as one of Dublin’s most promising emerging guitar bands.
