Math rockers (I prefer the less wanky term post-rock myself) Adebisi Shank are back after an absence of a half score years. This is their second of two nights at Button Factory. The first night sold out. It’s great they’re back. I shot them at Hard Working Class Heroes in 2009 and they blew me away.
Tonight we’re reassured that they remain noisy and abrasive with their Atari-bloops and loops, heavy distortion, and primarily post-punk-style filthy bass-driven melodies. Vincent McCreith is replete with red head mask, jumping and kicking his way around the stage. Larry Kaye squirms around worm-like behind a hundred pedals, and Michael Roe thrashes away in near darkness, illuminated occasionally from behind by the bright, old school computer-style graphics on the screens.
‘Start A Band’ is a short, thunderous shock of really tight chaos and ‘Orange Splash’ is bit like speed-enhanced disco fed through Throbbing Gristle, both from their new 10″ EP.
During the encore McCreith climbs off the stage and gets everyone around him onto their knees. At the end of the gig he and Kaye pass their guitars into the crowd.
Adebisi Shank have returned with more, and I look forward to even more.
