Nyah Grace has released her brand new single ‘Down’, the latest song to be taken from her forthcoming second album Divinely Devoted out June 20th via Palawan Productions.
The Manchester by way of Oregon neo-soul singer delivers relatable relationship blues with ‘Down’. Her voice – at once rich, wounded, and resolute – glides through themes of heartbreak, defiance and self-worth in the swaggering gospel song. She effortlessly showcases her incredible range as she delivers a show-stopping performance bolstered by an imposing wall of rich harmonies. With ‘Down’ Nyah Grace doesn’t just share a feeling – she immerses you in it.
The choral voices were created Phil Spector-style with producer De’Jour Thomas (Chlöe, Fousheé, Monaleo) in the studio as Nyah explains, “De’Jour stood me in front of the mic, really close, and then a little bit further back. Then we did it together a couple of times. We did tons and tons of takes. We did a couple way in the back of the room, just screaming it. One time I sang it in my head voice. Then one just really loose and shouting.”
‘Down’ has spawned what Nyah professes is “probably my favourite song” which came together fluidly as she explains further, “When I first heard the demo, it was just like ‘Whoa! This could be something really, really cool’. What’s funny is some of those lines were just one-takes I’d written a minute before, thinking it was just going to be a demo. Afterwards he was like, ‘Okay, it’s done’. That song really captures the moment.”
Continuing she says, “Writing ‘Down’ was a cathartic experience for me. It allowed me to channel the frustration, angst, and eventual acceptance that came from a past relationships and the way I was treated. I loved experimenting with the space and dynamics in this song and giving my raw emotions room to breathe.”
