Take the best parts of The Byrds and The Beatles, throw in some glam rock, and you’ve got the opening three-song run from The Lemon Twigs.
They came out with absolutely no easing-in energy, diving straight into the melodic, harmony-stacked power pop they do so well, and Vicar Street sounded perfect for it.
I was only there for the first three songs, but they absolutely ripped. “My Golden Years” landed especially hard live: tight vocals, huge choruses, and “Look for Your Mind” alongside “I’ve Got a Broken Heart” made for the perfect one-two punch. Michael and Brian D’Addario have that old-school frontman chemistry where one is pogoing around the stage while the other locks into impossibly clean harmonies.
The crowd seemed instantly won over too, lots of dancing near the front and plenty of knowing smiles from the older heads in the seats.
The Stones NYC were a really smart support choice, grimier and looser than The Lemon Twigs, but still carrying that same downtown New York lineage. They sounded like a band somewhere between CBGB-era punk and early-2000s indie sleaze, which worked perfectly to warm up the room at Vicar Street. They also understood the assignment for a support slot, no overlong intros, no self-indulgence, just quick, punchy songs delivered with confidence.
