The 3Olympia had its seats out for Freya Ridings, and that told you everything you needed to know about the kind of night it was going to be. Just a piano on stage, no band, no production to hide behind, the kind of show that shows you how good the songs can be when there’s nothing standing between them and the room.

Bea opened the night to an already filled out room, the singer-songwriter accompanied only by her keyboard player Gab, the same stripped back setup carrying through the whole evening. She talked between songs with an easy warmth, telling the crowd about how her song “Rich” was featured in TV show Off Campus and calling it the coolest thing that had ever happened to her, no doubt the reason so many people had turned up to see her. By the end of “Rich” the room was clapping along. She closed on “Born To Be Alive,” her biggest track, and left the stage having made a strong case for herself.

When Freya Ridings took to the piano, the room settled in for an evening that was always going to ask something of everyone in it. After she opened with “Euphoria,” a sweeping, quietly devastating opener that set the tone immediately, she thanked the crowd for their vulnerability, explaining that their willingness to be vulnerable with her is what allows her to write the songs she does. Freya went on to mention that for this tour she had decided to present Mother of Pearl exactly as it was written, with just her and her piano. She worked her way through the new songs from the album, and in this setting they landed with a directness that a full production might have dulled. Then came the older material, “Blackout,” “Still Have You,” “Weekends,” and “Lost Without You,” songs that have been with her fans for years, heard now stripped back to just voice and piano the way they were first written. For the day one fans in the room, it must have felt like a rare kind of gift.
