Stone Blind State – Release Americana Drenched New Single ‘There She Goes’

At the heart of Stone Blind State is the undeniable chemistry between guitarist Mick McDonagh and frontman Martin Furlong. With both responsible for song writing, the band’s sound far exceeds the sum of its parts. Stone Blind State began in 2019 with Mick as the founding member, releasing the successful EP ‘Alive’ the same year, but line up changes and the pandemic forced the band into hiatus. It wasn’t until Mick approached Martin with a handful of songs that the band sparked back to life again. This connection spawned more than 30 songs which the pair began whittling down into a more manageable chunk, focusing on the songs that ignited something in them. New single ‘There She Goes’ is the first offering from these sessions. Pulling on influences that range from the blues rock Americana of Counting Crows and Aerosmith to the Irish folk heroes John Spillane and Luke Kelley, the band roll these up and come back with a sound and voice that is entirely their own.

Authenticity is the keystone for Stone Blind State, striving at all times to create music that is honest and real. When it comes to writing the pair are careful not to force songs, preferring to let feel and emotion be their divining rods. It’s this sound that we hear on new single ‘There She Goes’.

From the first note of the track the Americana blues influence is clear, from the unmistakable tone of a Les Paul into Marshall to the wailing slide guitar helps create instant atmosphere, and sets the scene for the smokey bar scene painted in the lyrics. In tale that is universally relatable the song speaks of falling in love across the bar with someone who appears and just as quickly is gone, lost to the night and the haze of smoke. The band say, ‘The song is about someone taking your breath away. A door opening to the most beautiful person you’ve ever seen. While the pre-chorus is about unintended consequences. Sometimes in life we go down a road we never thought we were on, until we find ourselves dealing with the consequences.’ The song writing keeps melody and a good hook as its focus, with the guiding hand of the great storytellers, Springsteen and Vedder felt in the lyrical approach.

When it came time to record the song, they decamped to The Orchard Recording Studio in Enniscorthy Co. Wexford. Enlisting Brendan Carthy of Cry Before Dawn fame to play drums as well as handle production responsibilities. Brendan easily captured the sound in their heads, instilling the song with the sound and feel of a thousand smokey, whiskey and beer drenched rooms and a seemingly effortless warmth that recalls the bands influences.

There She Goes’ reintroduces the audience to the revamped Stone Blind State, establishing them as a new exciting emerging voice on the Irish music scene, and giving us a taste of what is about to come…
