Rainbow Girls / Gemma Cox – live gallery and review from Upstairs Whelans Dublin 04.09.2025

September 4th, the upstairs room of Whelan’s in Dublin played host to a heartwarming and joy-filled performance by Californian trio Rainbow Girls, with support from the ever-rising Gemma Cox, a singer-songwriter hailing from Kildare. In an intimate space glowing warmly with orange lighting and packed with an eager audience, the night proved to be as much about personality as it was about music.

Gemma Cox opened the evening with a solo set that showcased her delicate voice and thoughtful songwriting. Between tracks, she chatted easily with the audience, offering small insights into the stories behind her songs. This openness helped create an immediate connection with the room, setting a relaxed and welcoming tone for the rest of the night.

When Rainbow Girls took the stage, the atmosphere shifted from serene to sparkling. The trio radiated giddy excitement, their energy infectious from the moment they stepped up. Known for their rich harmonies and genre-blending style, the group wasted no time in winning over the already enthusiastic crowd. Each member brought a distinct personality to the performance, but it was their chemistry together both musical and personal that truly stood out.
Their set was peppered with humorous and often heartfelt banter, which had the room laughing and cheering between songs. Whether they were sharing stories from the road or riffing off each other’s comments, it felt less like a performance and more like a jam session among friends that the audience was lucky enough to witness. Musically, the Rainbow Girls moved effortlessly between folk, blues, and rock-infused tunes, their harmonies soaring in the intimate setting.

The stage lighting, bathed in a soft orange hue, added to the cozy, candlelit feel of the evening. It suited both acts perfectly highlighting the emotional warmth of Cox’s set and complementing the earthy, vibrant energy of Rainbow Girls.
As the night drew to a close, the sense of community in the room was undeniable. This wasn’t just a concert it felt like a gathering. Both acts brought sincerity, talent, and a sense of fun that left a lasting impression on the crowd.

Whether you came for introspective songwriting or feel-good harmonies, this double bill at Whelan’s delivered on all fronts.
