Hotgirl is great. Original post-punk pop(ish). Dirty effects-driven bass with noisy effects-driven, angular, off-kilter, sometimes-melodic guitar. A band that wouldn’t be out of place on Rough Trade. Fresh sounding. Brilliant. Definitely worth keeping an ear on.
Lambrini Girls put on an entertaining show. Energetic; noisy; filthy bass; ranting vocals; “Who’s ready to fuck?”; getting into the crowd and making almost everyone sit down; getting on the shoulders of an audience member with guitar and having someone else hold the mic; balcony diving. All the makings of a very exciting gig. But one has a sense that it’s all a little too contrived. A band that has seemingly tried to tick every single topical anti-establishment punk rock box. It feels a bit hollow. A gesture rather than a passion. But a label publicist’s dream no doubt. And the crowd certainly lap it up.
