“The release of ‘Own The Night’ EP is a real milestone moment for me. I tried to reflect somewhat the point of life I am in currently. As a person I feel I’m licking my wounds a bit, enough time has passed that I’m able to hover over parts of my past that caused me pain. Particularly in love, I hid who I was for so long, I got used to it. I’m still trying to undo that.
For example, I wrote the song ‘Own The Night‘ quite a few years ago about the kind of person I wanted to be but now realise it was about the kind of person I wanted to meet. ‘Not Another Love Song‘ is a song I wrote to literally try and stop myself from writing songs about the same person to help me move on, it only worked for a while!
This EP very deliberately ends in a version of Bronski Beats ‘Smalltown Boy’, a song that the gay community has clung lovingly to for so long. As a gay person, It’s a song that almost feels as if it holds you by the hand. Whenever I sing it, I feel as if its holding mine…the hand of a little boy who didn’t want to be who he was. “
