Irish Comedian and singer-songwriter Síomha Hennessy – releases new single ‘Building Character’ ahead of debut EP release and Dublin Show

Comedian and singer-songwriter Síomha Hennessy releases her hotly anticipated and totally unique debut EP ‘Building Character’, with a special launch show at Dublin Fringe Festival on 11th September in The Grand Social.  With her characteristic combination of acerbic wit and unexpected poignance – Hennessy delivers 5 original standout tracks in this assured and sophisticated debut.

Self-aware lyrics depicting her ‘character building’ misadventures are offset by wonderfully catchy melodies, luscious string arrangements, and Hennessy’s own stunning vocals.

Hennesy says: ‘’Some people spend their early adulthood building careers, houses, and savings. The only thing I’ve been building is ‘character’ which doesn’t get you very far in a mortgage application. But hey, at least I’ve got some good songs out of it! “

Described in a 5 star review byThe Irish Timesas ‘Hilarious and effervescent’, Síomha Hennessy is fast gaining a reputation as a truly exciting genre-bending artist – with shows that blend stand- up, theatre, and high quality original songwriting.

Now, she’s launching her debut EP of original songs…but true to form, this is no ordinary EP launch – there’s a full comedy cabaret show to go with it!

This hilarious and charming comedy cabaret is for anyone who’s ever felt out of step with their peers. With original songs and razor-sharp wit, this hour will give you hope whilst making you spit your drink out with laughter!

BASIC INCOME FOR ARTISTS PILOT

Taking the unconventional path is a big theme in Hennessy’s work, but she readily admits her career in the arts would have been a lot more difficult without the pilot scheme of the Basic Income for Artists, which she would like to see retained and expanded to all who apply and are eligible for it.

Síomha says ‘’This EP and my Dublin Fringe show is a living breathing example of the real-life positive impact of a basic income for artists. Without the good fortune of being randomly selected for the pilot, I do not believe I would be performing this show or releasing this record.

The basic income pilot scheme gave me the time to write, to workshop material, and to spend hours crafting the songs. It also gave me the chance to hire the services of other people – – the sound engineers, producers, photographers, and videographers that are vital to the production  of this work. I think my EP and accompanying Dublin Fringe show is a living testament to what can happen when you truly support artists.  For me, the BIA is the difference between continuing to pursue an artistic career or not. And that’s why it’s so important that the scheme is not only retained, but expanded out to all who apply and are eligible for it. ‘’
