Group A.D. today release their debut EP ‘Colour Space Transform”. And in the coming weeks the band will tour across the UK (with full dates below).
Group A.D. is a brand new Leeds based project. The name stands for The Group For Action & Dance. and their music sits somewhere between dubbed out, psychedelic no-wave and spaghetti-western orchestral maximalism. A seven piece, Group A.D. are a formidable live force.
‘Colour Space Transform’ comprises five tracks, each of which are defined by groove and rhythm, with widescreen orchestral moments and an apparent, but not defining electronic element.
On the new EP, they say – “The music has always aimed to suggest our eclecticism rather than ape our influences, and is in some way trying to make sense of my record collection. Imprints of ’60s film scores and ’80s dance music leave their trace over the tracks. I hope people can find something interesting, something unsettling, something new and something familiar when they take a trip through ‘Colour Space Transform’.”
‘Forza A.D.’ is the last track to be released from the EP, and was partly inspired by a trip to Napoli a couple of summers ago. There’s something in the pacing, the frantic synthesisers, the almost-jungle drum-groove and the string arrangements that reflects that trip.
Across the debut EP, tracks slip between the orchestral flourishes of John Barry and Ennio Morricone, the surf-rock of Jet Harris and spectral ‘80s dance floor maximalism – with each style appearing as suggestion rather than imitation.
Samples punctuate the songs throughout – narrations, incandescent preachers, machines, children’s voices, all a patchwork of cut-out motifs that open portals into uncanny new worlds.
The EP is available at independent record shops on black vinyl, and an exclusive red vinyl for Leeds’ iconic record shop, Jumbo Records.
