Irish indie-rockers Diveboy have released their tenderly euphoric new single, ‘Solar Sister’, coinciding with their appearance on Other Voices’ sold-out music trail.
After standout performances at All Together Now and Cork City Hall (supporting Feeder), as well as their highly anticipated appearance at Other Voices, it’s been a breakthrough year for Cork’s Diveboy, formerly known as The Burma.
‘Solar Sister’ is another introspective release to round out a busy quarter for Diveboy. Exploring relationships and life changes between adolescence and adulthood, the bittersweet single bridges the past and the present with warm memories and the comfort of connecting with old friends.
Vocalist Tony says, “The initial idea for ‘Solar Sister ‘ fell out very quickly one evening, sat with an acoustic guitar. I wanted to write a song that made you close your eyes and put your arm around your friend at a gig, reminiscent of something from the 90s like The Verve or Oasis. On reflection, it’s probably about being there for someone in a difficult moment even though you’re not sure what to do or say, it’s just about being there. All these songs are set in a world where friends have slightly drifted apart from one another naturally over time. I suppose it’s another song about the importance of friendship and staying in touch”
Built on a wistful chord progression, subtle, sweeping strings, and an earnest vocal delivery, Diveboy capture the ache and warmth of nostalgia in ‘Solar Sister’, a track that shimmers with the cinematic quality of a coming-of-age film.
Gearing up for a highly anticipated album next year, Diveboy have set their sights even higher, with a stadium-filling sound to match. They say: “When we sat down to write, we asked ourselves where we imagined playing. The answer was bigger rooms, arenas and stadiums! We wanted to create a sound that would fill the 3Arena or Wembley Stadium. Then Ruadhrí Cushnan brought a fresh approach and perspective to the way we recorded our songs and he was a joy to work with.”
