Belfast alternative band ANOMALyS – recently release the single  their groove fueled party feel track “Runaways” heres our review

ANOMALyS dives straight into an exhilarating alt-pop blend with their latest release, “Runaways.” Formed by Queen’s University students in 2022, the band—featuring vocalist and keyboardist Stephen Moreland, guitarist Louis Orr, bassist Padraig Manning, and drummer Luka Maxwell—have carved out a dynamic, eclectic sound that shines through on this track. A departure from their debut EP’s rawer vibe, “Runaways” takes the listener on a joyride across genre lines, effortlessly blending jangle pop and R&B influences with enough rock energy to fuel any late-night party.

Opening with a lively mix of layered synths and chunky guitar riffs, “Runaways” carries an undeniable groove, thanks in part to producer Rocky O’Reilly’s impressive synth arsenal at Start Together Studios. The track’s buoyant bassline and bright percussion keep it in a constant state of motion, while Moreland’s vocals lend a cheeky, almost mischievous quality to lyrics that dance between playful escapism and moments of self-awareness. The chorus is especially infectious, with its carefree mantra, “We’re gonna dance like a runaway,” encapsulating the song’s party spirit.

While “Runaways” may not be a track built on deep introspection, it’s refreshingly unapologetic about its intentions. It revels in the thrill of the moment, crafting a world where the usual pressures are left at the door. The lyrical nods to themes like fleeting fame (“Wait a lifetime for one shot at glory”) and carefree romance amplify the track’s escapist vibe, a perfect backdrop for a night where anything feels possible.

With shades of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Alt-J, and The Killers, ANOMALyS strikes a satisfying balance between indie-rock edge and pop accessibility. The track’s slick production, packed with hooks and unexpected twists, ensures “Runaways” stays fresh listen after listen. It’s an infectious tune, vibrant and full of personality, sure to keep fans on their feet.

The single runs away with a good 7 out of 10

Rating: 7 out of 10.
