If the first night of Wider Than Pictures was explosive, night two was the detonation.

Back at Collins Barracks for the second night of Amyl and the Sniffers headlining the series, the crowd may have been a little lighter than the previous evening although not by much, but nobody had bothered to tell the bands. If anything, Spider and Mannequin Pussy arrived with something to prove, both turning the volume, aggression and sheer intensity up another notch.

Spider wasted no time setting the tone, delivering another ferocious set that felt even more charged than the night before. Mannequin Pussy followed by pushing the evening further into beautifully chaotic territory, their performance possessing the kind of raw urgency that makes standing still feel like an act of betrayal.

And then came Amyl and the Sniffers.

They were on fire the previous night. Tonight, they were an inferno.

On paper, the setlist may have remained unchanged, but nobody in the crowd was getting the same performance twice. Every song felt faster, harder and more dangerous. Amy Taylor stalked, screamed and prowled across the stage with the kind of barely contained fury that suggests the PA system should probably have a restraining order.

Calling it an assault on the senses barely does it justice. It was a sustained, full throttle pounding from beginning to end, so brutal, so relentless, that Amyl and the Sniffers probably should have been arrested for the sheer violence of the performance.

But that’s the point. Punk isn’t supposed to be polite.

Night one proved they could ignite Collins Barracks. Night two proved they could burn the bloody place down.

Wider Than Pictures may have had a second night on the bill, but Amyl and the Sniffers made damn sure there was nothing second rate about it.
