James Blunt / Gareth Dunlop – Wider Than Pictures series, Collins Barracks Dublin 24.08.2024

James Blunt delivered an unforgettable performance at Collins Barracks, Dublin, on the 24th of August 2024, as part of his “Who We Used To Be” tour. Despite some brief Summery showers, the weather cleared up just in time, creating a perfect backdrop for the sold-out show in the historic setting of the former army barracks—a place that Blunt mentioned made him feel at home, given his own military background.

The night kicked off with a warm and soulful opening set by Gareth Dunlop, whose music set the tone for what was to come. As Blunt took the stage, the crowd was already buzzing with anticipation.

The setlist was a well-crafted journey through both new material and fan favourites. Starting with “Beside You,” Blunt immediately captivated the awaiting audience. The “Back to Bedlam” hit “Wisemen” then got a massive cheer from the crowd and really helped set the tone for the night to come. The emotional depth of songs like “Goodbye My Lover” and “Monsters” had the audience spellbound, with many visibly moved during the latter.

Blunt’s connection with the Dublin crowd was obvious as he ran from one side of the stage to the other for the majority of the evening and at one point began crowd surfing. There were many charming, witty and hilarious antidotes between songs, something Blunt has become known for over his career.

The encore was particularly powerful, beginning with “Monsters,” which left many in tears, only for the mood to shift to a celebratory vibe as Blunt closed the night with “Bonfire Heart” and “1973.” The crowd danced, sang along, and even as they wiped away tears, their smiles lit up the venue.

Overall, the night was a testament to Blunt’s enduring appeal and his ability to connect deeply with his audience, making the concert a highlight of the summer music calendar.
