In conjunction with release of Hole Erth last Friday, Toro y Moi shared two new, narratively-connected Kristie Muller-directed music videos for album tracks ‘Madonna’ and ‘Babydaddy’ – he moves from the lovestruck admission shot of ‘Madonna’ with a night vision camera to ‘Babydaddy’’s retelling of his favourite exotic dancer’s club routine. The two songs (the former of which features Don Toliver) illustrate how Hole Erth is the first Toro y Moi album to showcase Chaz Bear’s influence on the modern rap landscape.
Across the album’s 13 tracks, Toro y Moi synthesises anthemic pop-punk and autotuned, melancholic rap into a body of work that is both very much of the now, but also a reflection of long-running threads in Chaz Bear’s music history; from his childhood immersion in punk and emo to his past production work for some of the biggest names in rap. While Toro y Moi has long built a reputation for reinventing himself from one body of work to the next, Hole Erth might represent his boldest musical pivot to date.
On the heels of the album’s release, Toro y Moi will embark on a series of North American tour dates, with upcoming shows in Los Angeles, Now York City, Las Vegas, Miami, and his biggest headlining show to date in his hometown market in Berkeley, California.
