Laois based singer-songwriter Just Alice debuted last year with “Wait” and is releasing her second single “good thing.” via Youngblood Music this Friday, June 13th! Described as being an Americana inspired, folksy pop track in the same realm as early Taylor Swift and Noah Kahan releases, I had the chance to check it out ahead of release, and found it to be an amazingly easy listen.
With crystal clear vocals and a steady, melancholic beat, “good thing.” is a story of both the natural sadness that comes with and the grateful relief of a much needed breakup. At almost four minutes, it doesn’t feel dragged or repetitive, with the singer being lyrically upfront with the emotions at play in this story while also giving a great deal of hope. It’s hard to believe this is only her second release, and also deeply impressive; the Southern twang to her voice makes it a song that would feel just as at home on a country radio station as it would in a local pub.
Just Alice, or Alice Laffan, is inspired by the storytelling of the greats like Luke Kelly and Dougie MacLean, as well as the modern hits of Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams. She shared, “I wrote this song before I ever knew what it was about. The meaning came to me after I stopped holding my breath and realised that, although we may not believe it at the time, a difficult choice can be a good thing.”
I really enjoyed the heartfelt vulnerability on display, here, and give “good thing.” a 9 out of 10.
