I arrived at Custom House Square after Ash had already started playing, so therefore missed my chance to shoot them.
While watching their set, it occurred to me how many absolute bangers they have released over the past 30 years. When they are condensed to a support slot they can focus their set on a relentless barrage of their best work, and it was probably the best I’ve seen them perform yet.
A particularly nice touch was their last song, where they were joined by Dan Hawkins from The Darkness and Belfast legend Eric Bell, for a cover of Thin Lizzys ‘Whiskey in the Jar’, with Bell taking over on lead vocals.
The Darkness delivered a high-energy, spectacular show playing to a packed and enthusiastic crowd, the band proved once again why they are considered masters of rock showmanship.
The setlist was a celebration of their career, including fan favorites from their iconic debut album “Permission to Land,” such as “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and “Get Your Hands Off My Woman.” They also incorporated newer tracks, like the new single “Give Me Back My World” from their latest album “Dreams on Toast”.
A particular highlight for me was when they played ‘Barbarian’, which is my favourite of their songs.
Justin Hawkins was in top form, delivering his trademark charismatic and energetic performance, complete with dazzling vocals and witty banter with the audience. The band was tight, and the sound was powerful, creating an infectious, joyous atmosphere. The concert was a testament to the enduring power of their music and their ability to put on a truly entertaining and memorable show. The evening was a fantastic mix of nostalgia, humor, and pure rock and roll, leaving the crowd with contented smiles and a ringing endorsement for the band’s continued relevance, along with a possible ringing in their ears from all of the ROCK!
