Donegal singer-songwriter Seán Molloy has released moving debut single ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ – a powerful release with a message of hope at its core.
‘Here I am — if even just one person hears this and feels like they are enough, that what happened to them is not their fault, and that they don’t have to be defined by it, then this song has done what it was meant to do’.
Born in rural Donegal and raised in a council house, the meaning of ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ was understood by Seán from a young age. Though childhood was filled with the simple joys of fishing trips, holidays to Galway in the family’s old Volkswagen Polo and climbing trees, this sense of freedom and innocence would later stand in stark contrast to the hardships of Molloy’s adolescence.
Born with albinism and legally blind, Molloy struggled during his secondary school years, facing bullying and discrimination for his appearance and sexual orientation. His teenage years were shaped by addiction, grief, and personal loss, resulting in a period defined less by growth than by sheer survival.
Music became an escape and a lifeline. Through it, he began to untangle the threads of identity, eventually coming to understand that he was transgender.
After graduating secondary school, Molloy moved to the UK in search of belonging, where change, mistakes and growth defined his early adulthood. Unfortunately, a traumatic experience in college left Molloy broken and pushed once again to the edge he fought so hard to run from.
His return to Donegal in 2022 proved a surprising positive life decision, inspiring the artist to begin recovery, counselling and start anew. Sitting at home with his beloved dog, Luna, ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ came to life; an emotionally-driven, narrative song built on a pulsing ukulele rhythm and featuring delicate cello dialogue.
Now working in a job he loves, forging beautiful new connections and rekindling family relationships, Molloy’s journey out of darkness is an inspiring one. Having also recently begun testosterone, he feels more aligned with himself than ever before, embracing a future shaped by authenticity.
‘It’s Not Your Fault’ marks both a creative and emotional milestone, where Molloy’s voice stands as a testament to resilience, transformation, and the power of starting over.
