Razorlight – release unheard version of Number 1 hit ‘Lost In America’

British rock and indie icons Razorlight have unearthed a hidden gem with the release of a previously unheard demo of their smash hit, ‘America’.

The track topped the UK Singles Chart on its original release in 2006 and featured on the band’s five-times platinum second album, which sold 1.6 million copies in the UK, propelling the group, fronted by Johnny Borrell, into the mainstream.

Speaking about the new version, titled ‘Lost In America’, Borrell explains, “This was the first version that we put down. We tried to ‘sell’ it to any interested artists through our publishers but they were getting no interest. I loved it at this point but felt it was a little too safe for Razorlight.

Led by a driving bass riff and featuring a group vocal in the chorus, the track presents a more straightforward, uptempo take on the song. With an alternate, more romantic lyrical perspective, it offers a striking contrast to the familiar and much-loved version.

The single arrives alongside news that the band will release a deluxe edition of Razorlight later this year, with one track, ‘Wilfred Owen’, visible on DSPs ahead of the album.

In November, the band will hit the road in the UK and Ireland to celebrate the aforementioned album’s 20 year anniversary. The tour will see Razorlight’s four classic members perform the album in full, including defining classics ‘In The Morning’, ‘Before I Fall To Pieces’, and ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling I’ve Got’, alongside deep cuts like ‘Hold On’, ‘Who Needs Love’, and ‘Kirby’s House’. Razorlight’s debut album, Up All Night, went four-times platinum, selling 1.2 million copies in the UK. In the years since, the band has connected with a  new generation of fans, averaging more than 1.6 million monthly Spotify listeners. Their achievements include a UK No. 1 album, a Number 1 singlethree UK Top 5 albumstwo multi-platinum albums, and eight UK Top 20 singles.
