Underground hybrid post-punk and electronic évocateur ENOLA returns with their new single, ‘It’s Not Love’. It’s their first new music since their exceptional 2023 EP, All Is Forgiven.
On ‘It’s Not Love’, ENOLA embarks upon a stylistic shift as they divert away from their pure post-punk aesthetics that we have become accustomed to and incorporate an abundance of electronic influences. The development is a return to ENOLA’s roots as they first emerged as an electronic producer and DJ. Still with post-punk at its core, ‘It’s Not Love’ amalgamates synths and electronic drums which in turn provide the single with new wave reference points. ENOLA’s vocals are raw and powerful throughout, allowing us to perceive their emotion comprehensively as they compose a track in which they explore the concept of love within relationships.
Speaking about ‘It’s Not Love’, ENOLA said: “It’s about shaking the habitual tie. The song is about how we stay in situations & dynamics that don’t serve us because we have deep rooted bonds and attachments to people, places and the past. Sometimes, it’s not real love that keeps us in situations, but more fear, guilt & inability to let go.
The song is essentially asking a question, yourself why am I doing this? Why am I here? Why am I investing in this person or situation & does this make me happy? Is it love that keeps you there, is it a sense of familiarity & belonging? The weight of responsibility? And when was the last time you asked yourself this question. Is it love keeping me here? Is it love keeping us together?”
Also announced today is the news that ENOLA has been nominated for three awards at the Australian Independent Record Labels Association. The categories ENOLA has received a nomination within are Best Independent Punk Album or EP for All Is Forgiven EP, Breakthrough Independent Artist Of The Year, and Independent Producer Of The Year for Bonnie Knight for their production on the All Is Forgiven EP.
ENOLA is set to play two sets at The Great Escape, the first on Friday 17th May at 8.15pm at
A L P H A B E T, and the second on Saturday 18th May at 1.15pm at TGE Beach.
ENOLA is the solo project of Australian artist Ruby Marshall. Initially an electronic producer and DJ, with ENOLA they take charge of a full-band sound. They take inspiration from the upfront poetry of Patti Smith, the melancholic atmospherics of Joy Division and the snarling conviction of IDLES. But always driving them at their core, beyond any sonics, is the desire to reach people.
