Part-Time Model – sign to Lab Records and release debut single ‘Cut Off Point’

Fast building a formidable reputation as one of the most compelling new bands to emerge from Yorkshire in recent years, Part-Time Model – formed of Lucy Tessier (vocals), Rafael Mendes-Browne (bass), Charlie Wilberforce (guitar) and Ben Smith (drums)- have drawn growing audiences through word of mouth and live shows alone, and are newly-partnered with the revered indie label for their first set of releases.

Inhabiting a kind of musical unease, the quartet’s sound sits at the intersection of grunge, jazz, and modern psychedelia, echoing the off-centre songwriting of Nilüfer Yanya and Honeyglaze while hinting at the expansive sonics of Radiohead and Madison Cunningham. The band’s tenacious approach to live and refined musicality saw a sold-out debut headline at Hyde Park Book Club, before going on to sell out venues in Hull, York and Sheffield. As well as performing at Humber Street Sesh, the four-piece have also already shared stages with the likes of Welly and Lizzie Reid.

Detailing the origins of their first track, the group revealed: “‘Cut Off Point’ is an extended metaphor for cutting the imaginary umbilical cord between mother and child when you reach adulthood. It’s about grieving childhood and reckoning with a dependency that never really gets cut off, especially when all you’ve known is your parents’ support regardless. As a band, in recent years, we’ve all had to leave home for new cities and leaving our parents behind in the process brought this question to light.”
