The soon-to-be cultural icon October And The Eyes releases her new EP, Certificate Of Participation, out now via KRO Records. Alongside the EP release is the release of the focus single, ‘Rubber Gloves’, which follows the release of singles ‘Public Image’ and ‘Til The End’.
On Certificate Of Participation, songwriter and producer October purveys pure artistic brilliance. Creating a sound unique to anything on the scene today, October demonstrates why she is set to become a cultural icon for years to come. Fusing together post-punk, psych, grunge, glam, and alternative, to name just a few sounds, Certificate Of Participation is an EP that is invigorating and fresh. Impossible to pigeonhole it possesses swagger and exhilaration in equal measures, perfectly encapsulating October’s persona.
October wrote and produced the entire Certificate Of Participation EP, and it was co-produced by esteemed producer Yves Rothman (Amaarae, Blondhsell, Yves Tumor, Sunflower Bean).
Speaking about Certificate Of Participation, October said:
“Sonically Certificate of Participation was inspired a lot by David Bowie, in particular his ‘Berlin Trilogy’ album, ‘Station to Station’, and Iggy Pop’s ‘The Idiot’. I also listened to a lot of middle eastern psych music, glam rock and obscure folk artists such as Dave Bixby and Jackson C. Frank who inspired me to utilise the nylon acoustic guitar throughout the writing a recording process – something I’ve never done before. Other general influences and bands that I have always and will always inform my music are Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, The Doors and Rowland S Howard. Thematically The EP inspired by sci-fi writers like JG Ballard, William Burroughs and director David Cronenberg.
In its most simplistic form the EP is about humanity’s relationship with technology, the information revolution and my own very real fears of a climate induced apocalypse. The bad dreams I used to have about supernatural horrors have increasingly been replaced by nightmares depicting the end of the world. I’m not alone when I say I’m certainly susceptible to a sense of disenchantment – it’s a common feeling of hopelessness that’s felt throughout most people my age. I’m not a scientist or a mathematician or a pol.”
Speaking about the focus single, ‘Rubber Gloves’ October said:
This track is inspired by the documentary film ‘Fire of Love’ with further influence from science fiction novels such as JG Ballard’s ‘The Draught’ and William S Burroughs ‘Nova Express’, which I read a lot of during the writing period of this EP. Lyrically the song introduces you to a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by extreme heat and draught, where seduction is forced to take place behind the confines of silver heat resistant hazmat suits and sex within the sheltered safety of airlocked and pressure-equalised safety pods.”
On Wednesday July 24th, October And The Eyes will play what is set to be a standout show at The Shacklewell Arms, London. You can purchase tickets HERE.
