After earning Radio 1 airplay and critical adoration for her previous album, ‘Memory Girl’, Natalie McCool presents something altogether bigger and more ambitious with the release of her new record ‘Good For The Soul’ on September 9th, now showcasing its boundary-breaking, genre-bending alt-pop qualities with the new single ‘We’re The Ones’. It follows the recent ‘Coming Of Age’ (featuring Trans Voices), which was highlighted by Notion, The Line Of Best Fit and more. Listen to ‘We’re The Ones’ HERE.
With ‘We’re The Ones’, Natalie thrills with dynamic contrasts: the spacious, airy verses which allow the exquisite beauty of her voice to flourish at the forefront of the mix, with the thunderous, energising beats that get the fun started. Lyrically it’s a song which sits on the cusp of different life stages – the freedom and infinite possibilities that come in the first burst of young adulthood, with the maturity to realise that things won’t be this way forever. As she sings, “taxes and menopause” are waiting in the future, but right now it’s all about living in the moment.
Natalie says, “‘We’re The Ones’ is a euphoric, expansive track that celebrates youthful optimism in the face of monotonous adulthood, holding onto the vivid imagination and sense of ‘wilderness’ that comes so easily in youth.”
‘We’re The Ones’ was written, produced, recorded and mixed by Natalie McCool – a creative approach she takes throughout much of the forthcoming album. Andy Hall Hall (Bastille, Good Neighbours) contributed additional production and mixing to the track, while drums were performed by Rhys Jiang (Elliot James Reay).
As ‘We’re The Ones’, ‘Coming of Age’ and ‘I Fantasise’ all showcase, ‘Good For The Soul’ is an album defined by musical adventurousness and the self-confidence to unflinchingly chart personal experiences veering from joy to despair. Spanning a spectrum of emotions, it’s a record that lives up to its title by the simple virtue of celebrating the high moments in life, to finding shared catharsis in facing the lows. Sonically it matches those moods, from heavyweight summer pop through to darker, moodier atmospherics.
‘Good For The Soul’ is available to pre-order from Bandcamp. It is available on transparent effect purple and turquoise colour-mix vinyl as well as CD, while an album bundle also features a new t-shirt design. All orders include a free badge and a branded guitar pick.
Originally from Widnes and now based in Liverpool, Natalie’s rise so far has been supported by two legendary songwriters: she experienced a one-to-one masterclass with Paul McCartney while studying at at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and first came to attention when she won a songwriting contest judged by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
Further career highlights to date include two albums, her debut ‘The Great Unknown’ and the follow-up ‘Memory Girl’; and co-curating and performing ‘Welcome To Eurotopia’ in front of 14,000 people as part of Liverpool’s Eurovision Cultural Festival. The show featured collaborators such as Stealing Sheep, The Lathums, OMD’s Andy McCluskey, a ten-piece all-female band featuring artists from Ukraine, and strings from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
Natalie McCool will play two album launch shows at Liverpool’s Kazimier Stockroom (October 9th) and London’s Sebright Arms (October 10th) – limited tickets for both are available HERE. She is also confirmed for the Henley Festival(July 11th), the sold-out St. Michael’s Sessions in Liverpool (July 17th) and DevaFest (August 9th).
