The Birmingham grindcore legends, Napalm Death, tore through The Adacemy in Dublin this past Thursday, February 26, 2026, as part of their “Campaign for Musical Destruction” tour.
The Academy was the perfect pressure cooker for this. With a capacity of around 850, the room felt packed but energized, the crowd a mosh pit waiting to happen. True to form, the “Campaign for Musical Destruction” brought a varied but ethically aligned lineup, featuring thrash veterans Whiplash and punk stalwarts The Varukers, setting a high-octane tone before the main event.
Barney Greenway remains one of the most captivating frontmen in extreme music. His manic energy and “stomp” were in full effect, punctuated by his usual insightful (and often dryly witty) stage banter about social justice and human rights. The band’s tightness and relentless energy proved why they are still the gold standard for the genre nearly 40 years in.
The set was a career-spanning assault that balanced their newer, more “experimental” material with the 1.5-second classics that defined the 80s. “Narcissus” and “Contagion” from their recent output sounded massive and showcased their more “post-punk” influences. “Scum,” “Suffer the Children,” and “Dead” triggered the expected mayhem in the pit.
They closed out with their signature high-speed renditions of Dead Kennedys’ “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” and Slaughters “Incinerator.”
Oh and yes, they played “You Suffer”—and yes, it was over before the person next to you could blink.
It was a masterclass in controlled chaos. While many bands of their vintage start to lean on nostalgia, Napalm Death still feels like a contemporary, vital threat. It was loud, ugly, and politically charged—exactly what a Dublin crowd wants on a Thursday night.
