Mork’s Rota Til Ondskap is a collection of raw, unfiltered demo tracks that pay homage to the pioneers of Norwegian black metal. Originally recorded in 2007, these early and primal works capture the formative stages of Thomas Eriksen’s creative vision for Mork, embodying the raw energy and atmosphere that would define the band’s sound.

Previously available only on vinyl and bootleg CD release, Rota Til Ondskap now sees its first official CD release through Peaceville. Drawing inspiration from black metal icons, Eriksen’s compositions channel the spirit of the genre’s early days. The release is characterised by his distinctive take on black metal riffing, twisted melodic passages and an atmosphere of thick, hellish chaos.

Mork was created by Thomas Eriksen in 2004 & was primarily a side-project from inception until the debut album, Isebakke, in 2013. Since then, the band has rightly earned their accolade as one of the top Norwegian black metal acts of recent years, receiving strong endorsements from their peers, as well as notable guest appearances from members of Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir & 1349 on studio releases. Mork’s most recent album, Syv, received a flurry of 10/10 reviews across the board and was hailed by many as their best work yet –

Speaking on the new CD edition of Rota Til Ondskap, Thomas Eriksen shared:

“The roots. It’s a part of the title as well; «Rota Til Ondskap» meaning; «The Root of Evil».

Looking back now to the times of personal exploration of darker music and Black Metal. It is clear that I had no distinct inspiration from any specific artists at the time. This makes the tracks sound quite original and even more important for my own evolution.

Even though these are very primitive songs with even worse production, they make up Mork’s beginnings. This is the fourth version of the demo compilation; Rota Til Ondskap (2007), Rota Til Ondskap – Second Edition (2016), Rota Til Ondskap – Vinyl (2020) and now this new one which is also the first time on professional CD.

It is about time the three re-recorded tracks from 2014 made it on to one of the official versions. Another interesting but weird throwback was that I recently dug out the original multitracks and made stereo-mixes of two songs. Just for fun and as an addition to this new release.

Rota Til Ondskap is available everywhere now and includes three additional tracks from the Rota Til Ondskapsessions, plus an additional five tracks for this release, including re-recorded versions of the ‘Fortid Og Fremtid’ EP tracks, as well as two tracks featuring 2024 stereo mixes.
