Miles Kane and the Evils – self titled EP review

Miles Kane and the Evils have just recently released the self title EP, so here at Mc Gig Music, Carl Foran has given the EP a spin. You can read his review below and also come back for more as Carl will also be attending and reviewing the Miles Kane show in Dublin.

We are just around the corner from having Miles Kane back in our City and to bless us with what hopes to be a savage performance in Dublin’s The Academy on the 8th of May (2024).

But here we are with just a few days before that, and we are threated to a new EP from Miles Kane And The Evils.

Straight up as I blasted this from my speaker whilst having a shower (best time to listen to a new album by the way lol) I was thrown back to that first time watching Pulp Fiction.

Honestly, the image of Vincent Vega and Jules popped right into my mind with them in their post “head blown off Marvin” scene and I couldn’t help but feel that this album was a nod to the past and a nod to a forgotten genre,
SURF ROCK.

The Tornadoes spring to mind and their track “Bustin’ Surfboards” circa 1962.

To my amazement though as I was checking out Miles’s socials, he actually nods his inspiration back to Pulp Fiction which made my own interpretation have even more weight.

In his own words:

“Surf guitar has been a passion of mine since day one. Hearing Dick Dale in Pulp Fiction for the first time as a kid blew my mind.”

Dick Dale being the iconic opener for Pulp Fiction and of course we can’t forget the 2006 release of The Black-Eyed Peas “Pump it” which heavily incorporates Dick Dale as the main sample.

Twang-whammy bar-reverb-tremolo! As Kane puts it himself. And you can hear what the music sounds like just from that one statement.

No to forget the beautiful artwork for the EP too. Created by London/Nothingham artist Aidan Cochrane AKA ScribblerCreative. The album cover is a black inked up Lino Printesque surfer riding the waves of the beautiful sounds coming out of this EP.

Certainly one to listen to and an EP to add to your collection.

Miles Kane is set to play The Academy next Wednesday the 8th

In the words of Mia Wallace : Be there or be square.
