Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels – too release metaphorical Britpop love song ‘Better Than Oasis’ on Fri 1st November

‘Better Than Oasis’ is the single preceding the release of second album ‘The Optometrist’ on 14th February, 2025.

Matt Edible has been a jewel in the (admittedly fairly republican) crown of Hull’s music scene for many years.  From fronting cult avant-pop heroes Edible 5ft Smiths to leading Tom Robinson (6music) favourites The Holy Orders, he has consistently produced memorable and captivating music.

Building up to the release of sophomore album ‘The Optometrist’ (available 14th February, 2025) after releasing evocative single ‘Triage’ andmaking appearances at Truck Festival and Humber Street Sesh this summer, Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angelsnow present a clever spin on your typical love song in the form of the metaphorical Britpop serenade ‘Better Than Oasis’. Referencing the very best artists and sounds of the 90’s genre and beyond, Some Might Say this clever single is full of nostalgic, endearing twists bound to resonate with its most enamoured fans.

“As a teenager, I argued with friends. I claimed Noel Gallagher was a rubbish guitar player and I was better. The argument amplified and reached the logical conclusion “Yeah, I’m better than Oasis!”. I remembered this, cringed at my arrogance and ignorance, but thought – Great name for a song. Is it better than Oasis? That’s not the point.”  –

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angles‘ debut album Stairgazing (2018) featured the lush production and multi-instrumentation of Joe Bennett (Goldrush/St. Etienne), the drumming skills of Mike Monaghan (Gaz Coombes/Willie J Healey) and contained a wide variety of material ranging from the sublime, swooping, sweary love song Astronauts to the anthemic indie earworm Nightclubbing.  It also showcased a love of a wide range of styles from Post-rock to Americana leading the American alt-legend Josh T. Pearson to proclaim “The best thing out of Hull since the Humber Bridge!”

When Covid hit, Matt locked down at home to record the follow-up album – The Optometrist.  Alongside new additions John Andrew (Kingmaker) -drums, and Sarah Shiels -bass, Matt has produced a thrilling new collection of material ranging from the first singles, glam rock stomper Mirror shoes and phone intellectual bating Idiot to the new more soulful single Triage and beyond.

Upcoming shows:
1st December – The New Adelphi, Hull (matinee show)
17th December – Billy Bootleggers, Nottingham
