The second night of the newly launched Live at Castle Mills festival proved that the inaugural event has all the ingredients to become a permanent fixture on Ireland’s summer music calendar. Bathed in glorious sunshine once again, the picturesque Castle Mills site welcomed a noticeably larger crowd than the opening night, with just over 2,000 music lovers turning out to enjoy an evening of exceptional performances.
Opening proceedings were Engine Alley, whose energetic set provided the perfect kick start to the night. Their blend of powerful rock and infectious enthusiasm quickly won over the growing audience, setting the tone for what would prove to be a memorable evening.
Next came Lisa O’Neill, whose spellbinding performance demonstrated exactly why she is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest contemporary songwriters. Her unmistakable voice, heartfelt storytelling and captivating stage presence held the audience in complete silence one moment before earning thunderous applause the next. It was a masterclass in connecting with a crowd.
Headliner Matt Berninger brought the evening to a fitting conclusion with a beautifully crafted set that leaned heavily on material from his solo work. While fans of The National were treated to around four songs from the band’s celebrated catalogue, the focus remained firmly on Berninger’s own compositions, allowing his rich baritone vocals and understated charisma to shine throughout. His relaxed, conversational style between songs only added to the intimate feel of the performance, despite the sizeable audience.
Beyond the music, the festival itself deserves enormous praise. From the smooth organisation and welcoming atmosphere to the excellent range of food and drink vendor, everything ran seamlessly. The stunning Castle Mills setting provided a perfect backdrop for two days of live music, while the crowd on both evenings embraced the occasion with warmth, respect and genuine enthusiasm.
If this first edition is anything to go by, Live at Castle Mills has laid the foundations for something truly special. Long may it continue. Kilkenny has a fantastic new festival on its hands, and credit must go to the organisers for delivering an event that combined great music, superb organisation and a wonderful atmosphere. Here’s hoping Live at Castle Mills is here to stay.
