Emerging British avant-pop artist and multi-instrumentalist Maddie Ashman releases her second single “I hate goodbyes”, out now via AWAL. Maddie will also bring her thrilling solo live show to Rotterdam’s Left Of The Dial festival next week before joining King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard as support for their EU Rave Tour this November
Maddie has been teasing the new track on her socials for the past few weeks through stripped back piano and guitar versions, which have racked up millions of views and earned support from the likes of John Mayer, Sudan Archives, and Bonobo, who join the likes of Jacob Collier, Caroline Polachek, Ólafur Arnalds, Sampha and more lauded musicians who have praised Maddie’s compositions online.
“I wanted to write a song about the difficulty of letting go” explains Maddie; “about how when you break up with someone it’s a whole world that you lose, more so than just one person, in reflecting that there will be streets you no longer go to, words you no longer say, sounds you don’t hear again”
Known for exploring microtonal music in uncanny, illusory yet accessible ways, Maddie explains the process of composing “I hate goodbyes”; “I tuned the piano in the song so it would be based on ‘just intonation’, that is pure tuning where notes are connected organically through harmonics. I liked the idea that the tuning would make the song feel personal, nostalgic and sweet yet at the same time uncanny and a little unreal…”
Maddie has already accumulated a strong following on social media where she has become known for her experimental self-recorded home performances, amassing over 30M+ views and over 230k followers over the last year, while catching the attention of many of the world’s most celebrated musicians.
