Leon Thomas has genuinely sent shockwaves through the music industry over this past year. Fresh off the back of two Grammy wins, the Brooklyn native arrived at the 3Olympia Theatre with a real swagger. While the R&B circle has long recognised his talent, this past year has seen his profile skyrocket into something far more mainstream.
Leon’s connection with the crowd felt natural. He paused throughout the set to chat, keeping the atmosphere loose and personal. Early on he even playfully encouraged the audience to bark in celebration of his recent Grammy wins – Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
For much of the night, the Olympia felt less like a theatre and more like an intimate late-night jazz club. The lighting stayed low, the mood restrained, and the focus stayed firmly on the music. While Leon did command the spotlight, the band played a central role in shaping the experience – tight, soulful and in sync throughout.
This wasn’t a show built for constant singalongs or explosive peaks. Instead, it was more one of those “sit back and take it in” performances, where the crowd seemed just as content to listen as they were to participate. That said, there were moments where the energy broke through. The standout came with the closing performance of “MUTT”, a track that has defined his past year. What had been a controlled, almost hushed room suddenly erupted into a deafening singalong, a reminder of just how far his music has reached.
