Kanadia have released the video for their new single ‘How Do You Sleep?’, taken from their recently released third album The Fire That’s Tearing Through Our Home.
‘How Do You Sleep?’ is a deeply intimate moment on the propulsive and expansive new record. The new single finds Kanadia taking things back to bare bones, where haunting acoustics soundtrack the mournful ballad of heartbreak and isolation.
Regarding the song frontman, guitarist and songwriter James Bettis says:
“‘How Do You Sleep?’ is a song that’s probably a bit more personal than I care to admit. On the surface, it might sound like a typical love song — but for me, it came from a very different place. I wrote it during a strange, estranged time with family members I’d always been incredibly close to. Suddenly, those relationships were breaking down, and I couldn’t recognise their behaviour anymore. I felt shut out, like I was the only one still trying to make sense of what had happened.
It was one of those moments where you realise how easily things can become irreversible. You hear stories about relatives losing years to stubbornness, and that’s exactly what I feared. It was confusing, painful, and it all felt very alien. Unlike most of our songs that evolve slowly, this one came pouring out in a single moment — I think because it was weighing on me so heavily.
At its heart, ‘How Do You Sleep?’ is a plea to set things straight. It’s a question: “Why are you acting like this doesn’t matter? Do I even know you anymore?” That feeling — of caring too much while the other person seems unmoved — can really drive you mad. The title isn’t meant as an insult; it’s more like saying, “How can you just let this lie while I can’t?”
What I love about the song is how it still connects on another level. Even though it came from a personal place, it somehow took on the shape of a love song — and I like that duality. It feels both intimate and universal, which was a new thing for me.
This song also fits perfectly with the reflective nature of our new record. There’s a lot of material on this album about loss, distance, and those deep questions that come with change — that’s really where my head was during the writing process.
We recently shot a music video that really captures the song’s lonely, reflective energy. It’s simple but effective — just like the track itself.”
Kanadia are completed by Melissa Marshall (synth/keys), Tim Lucas (drums) and Everton Barbato (bass). They recorded The Fire That’s Tearing Through Our Home at Evolution Recording Studios in their Oxford hometown, produced by Willie J. Healey guitarist Chris Barker and mixed by Tom Leach (Lewis Capaldi, Pa Salieu, Spiritualized) at Snap Studios, London.
Together they have created a record which showcases an abundance of dreamlike rich soundscapes, massive hooks, and haunting melodies throughout its expansive 50-minute journey examining the fragility and beauty of human emotion.
Following a triumphant album release show at Oxford Academy in September, Kanadia have announced two further headline shows for December 2025. They will perform at The Eagle Inn in Manchester on December 7th, and The Exchange in Bristol the following day. Tickets are on sale now via https://www.kanadia.band/gigs
