Irish Indie-Folk artist Frowning Hours – returns with poignant new single ‘The Orchard’

Frowning Hours is the indie folk-rock project of Irish singer-songwriter and actor Ger Kelly, whose evocative songwriting and distinctive voice have quickly earned him a growing reputation on Ireland’s live music scene.

Before stepping into the spotlight as a recording artist, Kelly spent more than 15 years working as a professional actor, performing on some of Ireland’s most prestigious stages, including The Abbey Theatre, The Gate Theatre, and with Druid Theatre Company. His theatre career saw him appear in acclaimed productions of works by Sean O’Casey, Shakespeare, and many other celebrated playwrights.

Music has long been an integral part of Kelly’s artistic journey. His haunting vocals featured in numerous theatrical productions, from original scores by composer Tom Lane to works by Stephen Sondheim. It was through these experiences that he discovered a passion for songwriting and began developing his own musical voice. He later studied songwriting at BIMM Dublin, leaving the course early when a major acting opportunity arose.

Since launching Frowning Hours in 2024, Kelly has built a loyal and steadily growing audience. His first six singles have received widespread radio support and critical praise, establishing him as one of Ireland’s most promising emerging folk artists. His latest release,’The Orchard’ marks the next chapter in a musical journey that has been years in the making.

As a live performer, Kelly has appeared on some of Ireland’s biggest stages and festivals, including Whelan’s, Electric Picnic, and All Together Now, and has shared bills with and supported acclaimed artists such as Mick Flannery.

Alongside his music career, Kelly continues to work as an actor and recently appeared in the Netflix series ‘Bodkin’ as Teddy, a blacksmith described as having “the voice of an angel”, a fitting reflection of the qualities that define his music.

Combining the storytelling instincts of a seasoned actor with the emotional honesty of a songwriter, Frowning Hours creates intimate, atmospheric songs that resonate long after the final note. His debut single, ‘Someone Who Won’t’ and all subsequent releases are available on major streaming platforms.

On his latest single, ‘The Orchard’, Frowning Hours delivers a poignant meditation on empathy, connection and the quiet hope of finding our way back to one another. Blending warm indie-folk textures with buoyant melodies, the song reflects on a world where we’re more connected than ever, yet often feel profoundly alone.

Rather than offering easy answers, ‘The Orchard’ invites listeners to look beyond first impressions and recognise the unseen experiences everyone carries. It’s a gentle call for compassion, understanding and the restoration of the sense of community that can often feel absent in modern life.

“‘The Orchard’ seems to change its meaning for me every now and again,” says Ger Kelly. “Ultimately, I think it’s a song about the resuscitation of a sense of community that seems to be lost these days. It’s a call for compassion and understanding. It’s very strange to me how, in the golden age of communication, there’s so much isolation. I guess I’m just trying to say, ‘Hello in there,’ like John Prine advised.”

With its thoughtful lyricism and quietly uplifting spirit, ‘The Orchard’ captures the emotional honesty that has become a hallmark of Frowning Hours’ songwriting. It’s a reminder that even in an increasingly disconnected world, empathy remains one of our most powerful ways of finding each other again.
