Composer, vocalist, guitarist and poet Hannah Frances announces her new album, Nested in Tangles, out October 10th via Fire Talk, presents lead single/video “Surviving You,” and plots a headlining tour. With this distinctive body of work, Hannah Frances solidifies herself as an artist of insurgent emotional clarity, committed to personal truth and self-actualization. Nested in Tangles spans the realms of progressive rock, avant-folk, and jazz, but remains anchored throughout with Frances’ signature vocal leaps and percussive, polyrhythmic fingerpicking.
Frances wrote Nested in Tangles throughout 2023 and 2024, almost immediately following the completion of her critically acclaimed album, Keeper of the Shepherd. On Nested in Tangles, Frances narrates complex stories of familial estrangement, emotional trauma and a deepening of her own sense of trust, through a collection of intricate, dizzying and large-scale compositions. Alongside longtime collaborator Kevin Copeland, Frances brought on Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear to produce and arrange a pair of tracks, and enlisted friends to contribute horn, wind, and string arrangements. Born from an expanded range of musical influences including contemporary avant-garde classical composers and 70s progressive rock, Nested in Tangles surprises in its dynamics and compositional detours.
Lead single “Surviving You” is presented alongside an incredible video filmed by Derrick Alexander, edited and colored by Vanessa Castro, and directed by Frances herself. Shot in Frances’ former homebase of Chicago, the “Surviving You” video features longtime friend and collaborator Sarah Clausen, who also contributes saxophone and bass clarinet on the track. “‘Survivng You’ is a reflection on the ways generational trauma can repeat itself when unexamined, and the ways we learn to protect ourselves through necessity,” Frances says.
“It’s a personal account of receiving harm from people who have projected their own pain onto me, who refuse to see themselves or take accountability for the impact of their actions. I was reckoning with my rage, and recognizing how much I’ve lived in survival mode for the majority of my life. This is for anyone who grew up in a turbulent and harmful home and is learning to affirm their lived experience.”
