Every singer and musician that ever stood on a stage north of the border during the so-called ‘Troubles’ was a hero and, although they didn’t realise it then, showbands from all over the island of Ireland were the primary source of harmony and respite during those troubled times. Night after night, they brought communities – regardless of political or religious differences – together to meet and dance with each other in the ballrooms and the marquees. While no generation has a monopoly on talent, in the 60s and 70s, it was widely accepted that to be in a top showband, musicians had to be able to play every musical style. Such was the respect for and the popularity of the showbands that their era saw more musicians in full-time employment than ever before or since.
At that time, there was danger in travelling the highways and byways in the dead of night but, mistakenly convinced that musicians were exempt from the violence, the brilliant, young, apolitical Dublin based Miami Showband paid the ultimate price for bringing joy and happiness to their massive, mixed fan base.
The Miami Showband 50th Anniversary Memorial Concert at Vicar Street in Dublin on September 29th will bring together a star-studded lineup of legendary Showband superstars along with Folk and Rock royalty and the cream of our young Country Music stars to celebrate the band that will forever represent the very best of their kind.
All profits from the concert will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society.
