The last few weeks I decided to give Nachtblut’s new album Todschick a shot, even though I don’t typically listen to the band. Not only that, but this was my first time properly diving into an album in a different language. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but honestly, it was a fantastic listen and I was definitely pleasantly surprised.
Right from the start, Von Hass Getrieben sets a bold tone, delivering heavy, dramatic energy that lets you know you’re in for something intense. The title track Todschick blends dark, brooding synths with crushing riffs in a way that makes it both eerie and strangely addictive. The mix of 80s-inspired elements with Nachtblut’s signature dark metal sound really makes the album feel fresh. The reaction to the singles already released from the album have been very positive and I believe those reviews will continue with the full album release.
What really impressed me was how much variety Todschick offers. Manchmal kommen sie wieder leans into dark new wave vibes, while Kinder des Zorns brings headbanging energy with its heavy riffs. Then there’s Schneller als der Tod, which throws in Wild West-style elements—something I definitely wasn’t expecting from this band, but it somehow works.
The album also plays with themes beyond just music. Das Leben der Anderen takes a stab at modern society, critiquing social media obsession with intense, gut-wrenching vocals layered over sharp instrumentals. Meanwhile, Stirb Langsam offers a more playful escape, referencing film classics while still sneaking in deeper commentary.
Askeroth’s vocals are a huge part of what makes Todschick so engaging. Even without understanding many of the words, the raw emotion is definitely there to feel and hear. The production, handled by Chris Harms (Lord of the Lost), gives each track a sharp, polished sound without losing that gritty edge. For someone stepping into Nachtblut’s world for the first time, Todschick was a surprisingly gripping experience. The language barrier didn’t take away from how good the music was. So, whether you’re a longtime fan or just curious about the genre, this album is worth checking out. It’s dark, full of unexpected twists and overall a really good listen.
