‘Eat Alone’ is the second single to be taken from The Open Flames – upcoming album ”Same Time Next year” out next month, read our single review here

The Open Flames have truly hit their stride with “Eat Alone,” a dark and undeniably catchy new single. From the very first note, the song pulls you into a compelling mix of sounds. A scratching effect leads you into a steady drumbeat that drives the rhythm forward. Layered on top are haunting lyrics that immediately grab your attention. By only the third play of this track, I found myself pacing around my kitchen, singing along to the whole song. It’s the kind of track that effortlessly gets under your skin and stays there.

Lyrically, “Eat Alone” is moving and explores themes of loss, loneliness, and the struggle to let go. The central line, “those who eat alone, die alone,” repeats throughout, but its meaning evolves as the song progresses. At first, it feels like a warning, but the response—“yeah, but they die last”—brings in a sense of quiet rebellion. It’s as though the person facing into their final moments has accepted their isolation, even finding a strange strength in it.

The story unfolds with lines like, “when I held your hand, you didn’t seem to know, so I told the doctors it was time to let you go,” capturing the heartbreak of saying goodbye to someone you love. It’s raw and honest, showing a moment that feels all too real for anyone who has faced a similar loss.

The at times laid back vocals bring the themes of the track to life with just the right mix of grit and melody. The delivery reminds me of early Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, with that conversational, almost narrative tone. At the same time, there’s an edge that feels similar to Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers. It’s an interesting mix that fits the song perfectly.

The instrumentation is simple but incredibly effective. The drumbeat sets a steady foundation that drives the track forward without overwhelming it, while the guitar has this cool, slightly offbeat rhythm that adds its own personality to the mix. Neither element outshines the other—they work together seamlessly to keep the song engaging from start to finish.

What stood out to me was how easy it was to get hooked on this track. Even with its heavier subject matter, the melody is so infectious that I caught myself singing along without even thinking about it. It’s the kind of song that sticks in your head for hours, but in the best way.

The Open Flames have delivered something special with this one. It’s dark, thoughtful, and ridiculously catchy—a combination that not every band can pull off. If you’re into bands like Arctic Monkeys or The Pixies, give “Eat Alone” a listen. Just don’t be surprised if you’re still singing it hours later.

The band plan to release their new album next month and as always we’ll share our thoughts on it on release day.

”Eat Alone” scores an 8 out of 10 on Alans meter
