Irish indie-rockers Diveboy today release their emotionally-charged new single, ‘Built-in Heartbreak’.
Their first release of the year following standout performances at All Together Now, Other Voices and Cork City Hall (supporting Feeder) in 2025, members Tony O’Donovan (vocals), Peter Piggott (lead guitar) and Cian Doherty (drums) have stayed true to the sound that has earned them two top 5 albums in the Irish charts, five Homegrown Top 20 singles and a slot at Glastonbury.
Earning support across Irish media for gleaming single ‘Suntrap’, nostalgic track ‘Glory Days’ and the tenderly euphoric ‘Solar Sister, including Hot Press, Golden Plec, RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2FM and SPIN, new single ‘Built-in Heartbreak’ rings in Diveboy’s “glowing” indie-rock sound (Rolling Stone) as another introspective release and bittersweet tale of woe.
O’Donovan says, “The idea for ‘Built-in Heartbreak’ came about when I was around at a friend’s house listening to one of Bob Dylan’s old radio shows. Bob was introducing a country singer when he said – “Johnny had a distinctive voice that songwriters loved, it had a little catch in it, like a built-in heartbreak.”, and that phrase really jumped out at me. This was the first time we were writing a song where we had the title first, so we had a lot of fun trying to figure it out. It has a moodiness to it that I think fans of our music will be familiar with”
The single continues to capture Diveboy’s talent for narrating the ebbs and flows of the human experience, drawing from love, heartbreak, truth and memory with depth and candour. Their refined, elegant indie sound resonates throughout, shaped with renowned producer Ruairí Cushnan (Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Mumford and Sons).
With their sights set on a stadium-filling sound, Diveboy are stepping confidently into their most expansive era yet.
