Dublin’s 3Arena played host to a memorable stop on Counting Crows’ The Complete Sweets! tour, and the atmosphere inside the venue was nothing short of electric. Known for their introspective lyrics, genre-blending sound, and deeply nostalgic anthems, the band delivered a set that balanced old favourites, thoughtful covers, and a few surprises.
The night kicked off with a heartfelt prelude by drummer Jim Bogios, who came out to speak about the band’s long-standing connection with Dublin. His words struck a chord with the crowd, many of whom have likely followed the band for decades. He then introduced the evening’s opening act Jimmy & Immy, the acoustic duo of James Maddock and Dave Immergluck (the latter also a longtime member of Counting Crows). Their stripped-back performance created a warm and intimate vibe, acting as the perfect palate cleanser before the main event.
When Counting Crows finally took the stage, they wasted no time igniting the crowd with their opener, “Spaceman in Tulsa.” From the very first notes, it was clear the audience was fully invested, erupting into cheers that set the tone for the rest of the night. Frontman Adam Duritz, as charismatic as ever, effortlessly commanded the stage with his unmistakable voice and poetic presence. His storytelling quality was on full display, reminding the audience why the band has retained such a loyal following over the years.
The momentum continued to build early in the set, reaching a peak during the third song, “Mr. Jones,” arguably the band’s most iconic hit. The crowd’s reaction was deafening, fans singing every word in unison, creating a chorus that rivalled the band’s own vocals. It was a powerful reminder of just how deeply these songs have embedded themselves in the hearts of listeners.
The setlist included a thoughtful mix of classics and curveballs. Particularly noteworthy were two covers that received a warm reception, a lively version of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi,” which they’ve long made their own, and an unexpected yet surprisingly fitting rendition of Taylor Swift’s “the 1.” The latter brought a fresh, emotional nuance to the set and showcased the band’s ability to adapt contemporary material to their distinctive style without losing authenticity.
After a packed main set filled with both energy and introspection, the band returned for a two-song encore, closing the night with “Under the Aurora” and the always-fun “Hanginaround.” The encore felt like a celebration, an uplifting, joyous finale that left the crowd buzzing long after the final notes faded.
Throughout the show, the production was top-notch. The stage design was simple but effective, allowing the music and performances to shine without distraction. Lighting changes subtly matched the mood of each song, while the sound mix remained clear and balanced, even at the height of the crowd’s exuberance.
What stood out most about this concert, however, wasn’t just the music, it was the connection. There was a palpable sense of appreciation between the band and their fans. Whether it was Duritz’s emotive delivery, the band’s tight musicianship, or the audience’s unwavering energy, the night felt like a shared experience rather than a one-sided performance.
In a music world that often prizes spectacle over substance, Counting Crows reminded everyone at the 3Arena why sincerity, strong songwriting, and emotional truth still matter. The Complete Sweets! tour isn’t just a greatest hits parade, it’s a testament to a band that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. For those lucky enough to be in Dublin, it was more than just a concert, it was a heartfelt celebration of music, memory, and connection.
