The night before Nobody’s Coming To Save You arrived, Gurriers gave everyone lucky enough to grab a ticket for The Grand Social the whole thing. All ten tracks, in order, only breaking in the middle to play some of their hits. They opened on the title track and closed on “Crybaby,” exactly as the record does.
It’s certainly a different record to Come And See. It has everything a Gurriers fan would want, but there’s more groove and more space in it now. “Pins” leans into 90s boom bap production while keeping the band’s guitar-driven core, and “Party Lines” brings a streak of funk to the album. Heard front to back in one sitting, as everyone did on the night, a step forward that pays off.
Much of the album had already been road tested on their recent run in America, and “Drones” was one song was getting its first airing anywhere outside it. “I Wish I Was,” second last on the night, was played live for the very first time ever and sure to become a staple of their live sets. The band flagged all this as they went, then let the songs carry the rest, saying little beyond how thankful they were to everyone for being there.
The one break from the record came after “Today Is Not Enough,” right where you’d flip the vinyl. “Nausea” and “Des Goblin,” the opening pair from Come And See, came back to back, followed by “Top Of The Bill,” three songs that got the crowd moshing.
