When you hear Sam Tompkins’ heartfelt and cathartic second album, Are We Gonna Sing?, you’ll feel as though you’re in the room with him. This is very much by design. “A lot of it was recorded live, which is why my vocals sound the way they do – they’re not too polished or covered in reverb,” says the Brighton-based singer-songwriter. “I’m never afraid of including the odd imperfection because I think that’s where the feeling lies.”
Sam’s 2022 EP Who Do You Pray To and 2024 debut album Hi, My Name Is Insecure established him as one of UK music’s most compelling and emotionally resonant new voices. Both cracked the Top 10, building on the success of his 2022 breakthrough single ‘Lose It All’, a tender piano ballad that challenged the notion that “grown men can’t cry”. A year earlier, he made a major international smash with ‘To the Moon’, a drill-flavoured collaboration with Jnr Choi that went viral on TikTok and amassed over 300 million streams on Spotify alone. But Are We Gonna Sing? is his boldest and most accomplished body of work yet. “I’m really showing you Sam Tompkins the artist as well as Sam Tompkins the singer,” he says proudly.
He’ll be bringing the album on the road with his Are We Gonna Sing? Tour, which comes to The Grand Social this October.
