Emerging from London’s shadowy underground, Mouth Ulcers are a fast-rising four-piece redefining modern goth through a lens of post-punk revivalism and cinematic atmosphere. Formed in 2025 by vocalist/guitarist Zak Watson alongside Josephine Rose (guitar/vocals), Jamie-Lee Culver (bass), and David Zbirka (drums), the band quickly evolved from a spontaneous studio experiment into one of the UK’s most talked-about acts.
Blending the stark emotional minimalism of Joy Division with the romantic gloom of The Cure and the angular intensity of Bauhaus, Mouth Ulcers craft a sound built on melodic basslines, wiry guitars, and cavernous baritone vocals. Their music—often described as “music for vampires to dance to”—balances menace and melody, evoking a gothic landscape that is both eerie and irresistibly danceable.
Despite their short lifespan, the band’s trajectory has been rapid. They made their live debut in early 2026 at the Grauzone Festival in The Hague—an appearance billed as their very first show—before quickly moving into a string of early performances across the UK and Europe
Their 2026 single “Prevail”, released via LAB Records, marked a defining moment, showcasing a more cinematic and conceptual approach inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. The track explores psychological endurance and emotional suppression, themes that run consistently through their work.
‘Prevail‘ has picked up extensive radio support including BBC 6Music (Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins, Steve Lamacq), KEXP, Radio X, Kerrang Radio e
With a debut EP announced and a growing list of live dates and festival appearances, Mouth Ulcers are positioning themselves at the forefront of a new gothic resurgence—one that feels both reverent to the past and urgently contemporary. Their ascent has been swift, but their aesthetic—rooted in atmosphere, vulnerability, and emotional intensity—suggests a band built for longevity.
