The Fynches, an Irish folk-rock band channelling the golden age of hard-hitting melodicism, today release the official music video for their new single Heavy—the first offering from their long-awaited self-titled debut album, out October 7th.
The brainchild of Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (lead vocals and guitar) and Oisiìn Walsh-Peelo (vocals and keys – to same but two), The Fynches also comprise Camryn Teehan (drums), Fionn O’Neill (bass), and Julia-Maria (cello).
Directed by Adrian O’Connell and filmed in Fisher’s Cross Pub in West Cork in familiar surroundings, the video offers a candid snapshot of the band’s roots.
“The majority of the Heavy video was filmed in my local pub with the help of the wonderful patrons Denis and Marie O’Donovan,” says Oisín. “It’s quite a special place for us as we’ve taken part in the music sessions there over the years and it’s the warmest welcome in Ireland in that pub. Adrian O’Connell used the space beautifully creating both a ‘living room’ and ‘pub’ scene within a single shot around which we based the narrative of the video. If you can call it that! The stunning locations are all in West Cork and the dark weather and landscape encapsulates the sombre mood of the song. We had great craic filming it!
‘Heavy’, the album’s lead single, is marked by a dynamic of stripped down poignancy and ornate, almost orchestral pathos. Diaristic lyrics, tragic harmonies, and desperate acoustic guitar are exploded by the chiseled moodiness of expressive cello strains and a controlled, epic intensity. ‘Heavy’ is a grand, laden elegy.
