As Ciaran Lavery – releases the new single ‘We’re Looking For A Hit’ today featuring Joshua Burnside, take a read of our review

Ciaran Lavery’s new single, We’re Looking For A Hit, is self-aware songwriting, touching on honesty with a hint of tongue in cheek wit. Featuring the smoky, understated vocals of fellow Belfast singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside, the track is sure to be a standout moment from Lavery’s newly released album Light Entertainment, which debuted today. Lavery performed at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast last night, as part of his promotion for the album. His next dates include stops in London and Amsterdam on the 20th and 22nd of November respectively.

The song opens with a steady guitar riff, laced with subtle electronic undertones that complement the confessional lyrics. Lavery explores the relentless pursuit of success within the music industry, laying bare the paradoxes of ambition and self-worth. The refrain, “Ohhh ohhh looking for a hit”, is as catchy as it is reflective, pulling listeners into hus world of inner conflict. The clever interplay between Lavery’s introspection and Burnside’s harmonies gives the track a layered richness.

Lavery’s lyrics are sharp, teetering between humor and despair. Lines like, “Don’t get me wrong, I like my quiet life, I can go anywhere I like without being recognized at all. But I would like the choice, that’s all,” highlight his ambivalence toward fame and his longing for balance. This is music that doesn’t shy away from the messiness of its own industry—a brutally honest reflection.

The production on the track is a careful balance between acoustic elements and polished modern textures. While it leans heavily on its lyrical content, the steady rhythm and understated electronic flourishes ensure the track doesn’t loose that sense of being engaging. The candid storytelling, paired with Lavery’s humorous and honest take on the industry, captures the essence of Light Entertainment’s broader themes—paranoia, information overload, and the search for meaning amidst chaos.

We’re Looking For A Hit is a clever, introspective critique that leaves its mark without being weighed down by cynicism. Lavery’s ability to confront heavy themes with sly wit is what makes him one of Northern Ireland’s most compelling songwriters. This track is no exception—intelligent, relatable, and memorable.
