Named one to watch in 2024 by the Irish Times and Irish Independent, slacker rock musician Ruth Mac announces her first headline show of 2024 in Berlin’s Schokoladen on 22nd March, with Utrecht’s Tamara van Esch joining on support. To celebrate this news, Mac today shares a live video of ‘Abundance’, a track off her debut EP Living Room, which was released on Beth Shalom Records in 2021.
Over the course of its many live outings, ‘Abundance’ has evolved and become a firm fan favourite. With Mac’s four-piece band set-up, the live version of ‘Abundance’ is a spacious, synth-led track held firmly together by a tight, tasteful and Khruangbin-esque groove courtesy of drummer Conall O’Maolain and bassist Nick Fox. This reimagining of ‘Abundance’ gives ample space for Mac’s vocals to soar and lyrics to shine.
Mac says of the track: “A love song in essence, ‘Abundance’ details a leap of fate toward a new life abroad and celebrates love as a constant throughout the trials and tribulations that come with starting afresh in a new country.”
The video was filmed in Mac’s own studio space on the outskirts of Berlin. It was produced in collaboration with Not Clean Productions, the label and community production company founded in the same studio by Mac’s collaborator Mark Glaister. Glaister also engineered the live session, which was filmed and edited by Berlin-based Irish filmmaker Josh Meany.
2023 was a watershed year for Mac; she played Ireland Music Week and headlined the Workman’s Cellar, as well as released her wistful single ‘Home from Home’. ‘Home from Home’ was dubbed the Galway Bay FM Track of the Week and enjoyed airplay on RTÉ Radio 1, Amazing Radio, Cork’s 96FM, Ocean FM, RTÉ 2XM, FM 104, Shannonside, Dublin City FM, and a number of other stations. Mac and her music have been featured by tastemakers at the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Nialler9, Paste Magazine, Buzz.ie, The Connacht Tribune, Entertainment.ie, Hot Press, RTE.ie, Essentially Pop, The Last Mixed Tape, GoldenPlec, and Postburnout.com.
Following the release of her debut EP Living Room in 2021 via Beth Shalom Records, Mac has brought her live show to Ireland, UK, and Germany, including support slots for synth-pop legends Hot Chip, Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds, and English indie rockers The Big Moon.
