Mysterious three-part entity itcallsme i surrenders to desire on the gritty, intense new single ‘UGLY’. Alongside the single, itcallsme i announces their debut EP CHARCOAL out April 29 via WIFE (pre-save here), exploring hunger in its many forms: obsession, self-destruction, devotion, temptation, and survival.
‘UGLY’ begins when control ends and temptation takes over. Built from dark, immersive electronica, it draws listeners into a soundscape that is both intimate and unsettling. itcallsme i shares that on ‘UGLY’, “we become raw, instinctive, almost anti-human. It’s a surrender to desire, where shame dissolves, and restraint disappears.”
The track was shaped over an extended period of experimentation and uncertainty, revealing a sound that feels immediate and unguarded. itcallsme i explains, “UGLY was an on-and-off track for a long time. I kept chasing a chorus that felt truly honest, but nothing ever stuck. It wasn’t until I stripped everything back and recorded the vocals alone in my home studio that something shifted. That raw, almost uncomfortable honesty is what finally made it click.”
The forthcoming EP CHARCOAL (out April 29th) is deeply personal, shaped by time, introspection, and a willingness to sit with discomfort rather than avoid it. Throughout the process, itcallsme i found themselves revisiting unresolved emotions and inner conflicts, capturing both the fulfilment of making music and the doubt, vulnerability, and isolation of it. “This EP reflects that full spectrum: the highs of creative expression and the challenges that come with it. I’m incredibly proud of this body of work, and I can’t wait for listeners to experience the EP in full.”
