Today sees new Irish music from Affection To Rent as they release their debut single, so take a read of our review

“If We Fall,” the debut single by Affection to Rent, offers a journey through emotional depth and introspection, blending vulnerability with grunge. The song, driven by frontwoman Abbey Addenbroke-Sheriff’s raw vocal delivery, channels the haunting melancholy reminiscent of bands like PJ Harvey and Smashing Pumpkins, two of the group’s cited influences. Abbey’s ability to convey a sense of longing, paired with the band’s ethereal, nostalgic sound, provides a captivating listening experience.

The lyrics reflect an existential meditation on love, belonging, and freedom. Lines like “If we fall, will you follow me?” and “I know how it feels to be free” capture a mix of vulnerability and resignation, offering an intimate portrait of emotional unraveling. The recurring theme of falling and following suggests a relationship on the edge, while the imagery of a “dog at a grave” underscores a sense of loyalty, even in loss.

Musically, the track weaves between grungy instrumentation and more atmospheric, dreamlike moments.

Formed in 2023, Affection to Rent has quickly made a name for themselves, particularly after Abbey was handpicked for Fontaines D.C.’s prestigious scholarship. This opportunity propelled her from her home near Bristol to Ireland, where the band began to hone their sound, combining grunge with dark, winding vocal melodies. They’ve already garnered attention, being longlisted for Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent competition. “If We Fall” encapsulates the band’s ability to fuse personal, introspective themes with a powerful dynamic sound, marking them as a band to watch as they continue to rise in the indie and grunge scenes.
