The Wellermen  – shere the new single ‘ Marry Her Today’

The Wellermen have captivated an international audience with a blend of the old and the new: the storytelling traditions of centuries-old folk songs, discovered largely through their attention-grabbing social media content alongside several sold-out UK and US tours in which their perfectly crafted vocal harmonies and exemplary musicianship makes for a joyous atmosphere. Now the Transatlantic group embark on an exciting new chapter of creative exploration and fulfilment as they share their new single and highlight their own original songwriting talents with ‘Marry Her Today’. It comes ahead of a major London headline show at Union Chapel on October 29th.
 
The single sees The Wellermen shifting into a new sound, one that mixes the rich, rousing five-way vocal harmonies that they’re loved for with a modern folk style which feels like the missing link between the classicism of The Dubliners and the rootsier moments of Kingfishr.‘Marry Her Today’ is a mixture of celtic romanticism and foot-stomping fun that has already been going down a storm at their ever-popular live shows. Even though it’s a song that feels as familiar as an old friend, it’s an original composition as they step into the spotlight as songwriters.
 
Jonny says, “Marry Her Today is the first song we wrote together in our Ohio writing retreat. It’s about the youthful exuberance of falling in love for the first time, wholeheartedly and without fear. We took inspiration from our younger selves, from the love we have in our own lives, and the love we see in our friends’ lives. This song became especially important to us when Sam and Laura got married in August 2026, bringing us even closer together as bandmates and welcoming a new member into the family.”
 
‘Marry Her Today’ was produced by their regular collaborator Cian Synnott (Amble, Gavin James, Sinead O’Connor).

The Wellermen went massively viral during the sea shanty TikTok craze of 2021 alongside their old friend Nathan Evans but their music connected in such an enduring way that the moment blossomed into a new career for them. The group, Americans Luke Taylor and Bobby Waters, and Brit duo Jonny Stewart and Sam Pope, hadn’t even met until they played their first show.  The final piece in the puzzle came later in 2025, when long-term collaborator Seb Payne became a full-time member of the group, who are all also instrumentalists as well as vocalists.
 
Together their journey has been one of remote connections, long distance journeys, and somehow building a new life that no-one had expected – the kind of themes that resonate so powerfully throughout their songs.
 
They recorded their self-titled debut album remotely and it exploded to such an extent that they finally met shortly before playing their first shows together. But since then there’s been no stopping them, with the song ‘Hoist The Colours’ exceeding 75 million streams alone; regular touring across the UK, Europe and North America; and even playing at Murrayfield Stadium at the Scotland v England Six Nations match, as well as the  They’ve since amassed 270 million streams and 170 million views at YouTube, and have huge TV performance highlights including The BRIT Awards, the BBC’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. 
 
In 2025 they introduced some of their own original songs alongside the traditional favourites on their second album ‘Northern Sky’, which was soon followed by an a capella version of the album. Their most recent release, this year’s ‘1778’ EP, took listeners on a journey of classic folk covers full of historical themes. And now ‘Marry Her Today’ starts a new creative exploration in which the band are now putting their own tales and experiences to the fore.
 
The band’s current North American tour ends at the Spokane Renaissance Faire on October 2nd. They then return to the UK to headline London’s Union Chapel on October 29th – remaining tickets are available HERE. The band are also confirmed to play the Manchester Folk Festival in March next year.
